Energy storage is vital to decarbonization of the electric grid, transportation, and industrial processes. It can reduce generation capacity and transmission costs by storing energy during periods of excess generation and saving it for when that energy is needed, enabling systems that rely on renewable energy to meet demand despite variability. MITEI’s work includes development and techno-economic evaluation of emerging storage technologies, as well as quantifying what it will take to scale and deploy them—and what the associated system impacts might be.
