A delegation of more than 30 faculty and business leaders from Japan visited the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) this week as part of MITEI’s continuing interactions with the Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo). Seiichiro Takahashi, the Consul General of Japan based in Boston, joined the MITEI event along with a member of his staff.
Science Tokyo is home to the Green Transformation Initiative (GXI), a consortium of Japan-based companies that promotes research to help the government of Japan achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. The Science Tokyo delegation was led by Professor Yukitaka Kato, Director of GXI. This week’s visit introduced some of GXI’s corporate members to MITEI and its mission to advance the low- and zero-carbon energy transition and expand access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy.
The companies in attendance came from across the Japanese energy sector. Representatives from the steel, chemical, energy storage, heavy equipment manufacturing, infrastructure, power generation, cement/concrete, and real estate development industries attended the event, along with staff from Idemitsu, which is currently a member of MITEI’s Future Energy Systems Center.
In January 2026, MITEI Director William H. Green and others will be traveling to Tokyo to participate in GXI’s day-long Global Workshop, which will be focused on decarbonization.
“The ongoing collaboration between Science Tokyo’s GXI and MITEI is a valuable relationship that is helping us advance low- and zero-carbon energy solutions under the leadership of experts working in some of the world’s largest economies,” said Green.
Science Tokyo was formed in 2024 through the merger of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University.
MITEI is an industry consortium that was established in 2006 under the direction of Professor Ernest Moniz.
