Cambridge, MA, March 25, 2024 — The MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) has signed a membership renewal with the Italian energy firm, Eni, to continue their low-carbon research collaboration. Eni, based in Milan, is a founding member of MITEI.  Its membership now runs through 2027.

MITEI’s portfolio of no- and low-carbon energy research has garnered support from Eni throughout the company’s membership. Eni first engaged with MIT in 2008 and has supported research for numerous decarbonization technologies including energy storage and carbon capture, utilization, and storage.

With MITEI’s catalytic efforts, Eni became an early investor in MIT spinoff company Commonwealth Fusion Systems, the Devens, Massachusetts, fusion energy startup. Eni also engages in research activities at MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center.

Eni’s engagement with MIT has resulted in numerous research successes, including more than 40 patent filings for low-carbon technologies and innovations, 70 projects, and more than 200 scientific articles. As part of its membership, Eni supports fellowships for MIT PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

MITEI member companies are critical in the energy innovation chain, linking MIT’s world-class research teams with innovators in industry and government—addressing urgent energy and climate challenges and moving solutions into the marketplace. Along with delivering industry perspectives on current technology challenges, member companies offer research opportunities and vital funding for next-generation energy technologies. Member companies also provide analysis of technology integration into existing and future energy systems.
