Alsym Energy—cofounded by Kripa Varanasi (Mechanical Engineering)—is developing rechargeable batteries that match the performance of lithium-ion cells without using lithium or cobalt. Instead, the batteries use manganese oxide for one of its electrodes and a water-based electrolyte solution.
