Two MIT energy alums were named top “Innovators under 35” by MIT Technology Review. The alums, Miles Barr and Sarah Kearney, are now part of a legacy of innovators named annually by the magazine, such as Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
Miles Barr is the cofounder of Ubiquitous Energy, which is developing transparent solar cells to be used to power e-readers, smartphones and tables – and maybe one day whole buildings. Barr was also named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Energy & Industry list earlier this year. Learn more about the research behind his company.
This year’s honorees will be featured online on the Technology Review's webpage, and in the September/October print magazine, which hits newsstands on September 2. They will appear in person at the upcoming EmTech MIT conference from September 23–25.

MITEI in brief
Can artificial intelligence (AI) help reduce energy use and improve efficiency faster than the rate at which it consumes electricity to get trained and deployed? MITEI Principal Research Scientist Deepyjoti Deka helps address this question while moderating a panel at the 2026 Energizing@MIT: MITEI's Annual Research Conference and through his work with MITEI's Data Center Power Forum.
